PPTA Industrial Action - Wednesday 15 September
The PPTA has advised the Long Bay College Board of Trustees that teachers at our school will be taking strike action on Wednesday 15 September. The strike will affect all students, from Year 9 to Year 13.
After careful consideration, the Board has decided that, due to the unavailability of staff, it would be impracticable for students to attend school for instruction during the period of the proposed strike.
Senior exams currently scheduled for Wednesday 15 September will move to Wednesday 22 September at the same scheduled times.
The Board regrets the interruption to our students’ learning. Unfortunately, the situation is beyond the control of the school. In these circumstances, it would assist the Board if the students concerned are able to remain at home, or if you are able to make alternative arrangements for care. Otherwise, the school will provide supervision for any students who do attend school during the strike. Please inform the College Office as soon as possible on 473 2500 if you wish your child to be supervised at school.
I appreciate that this may be an inconvenience for parents and students alike. Please be assured that student safety is our main concern.
Thank you for your assistance. Please contact Ms Allen on the above number if you have any queries relating to the Board’s decision.
Yours sincerely Russell Brooke Principal

Long Bay College declares winner of first student Master Chef Competition
Jessica Tansey, Year 9 student, was declared the winner of Long Bay College’s first Master Chef Competition on Friday 27 August. Jessica was awarded the coveted Long Bay College master chef apron and knives by the Principal, Mr Russell Brooke. Jessica had competed against 14 other contestants over a period of 11 weeks and battled against two other finalists Lisa Boterman (Yr 10) and Yao Dong (Yr 10). All three finalists had to cook and present a dish under time constraints suitable for a light restaurant lunch. Jessica’s winning dish was a prawn lasagne.
The competition was open to all students and out of the 50 who originally applied only 15 did the initial ‘bake off’. Those involved had to undertake a number of activities including blind taste tests, bake offs and invention dishes. Hospitality Teacher, Belinda Devlin who was responsible for organising the competition said ‘the students are so creative these days and the master chef competition gives them another outlet for honing their skills. This is the first competition of its kind at the school and it’s been such a success with the students we hope to be able to run another in Term 1 next year.
The panel of 4 judges included: Kelly Young, runner up in NZ Master Chef competition, Niels Naumann, Chef at Soul restaurant in Auckland, Don Cornes, ex restaurant owner, and Hospitality teacher Anthony Dooley. In summing up the judges’ comments on the three finalists’ dishes Kelly Young praised the students for the quality of their work and encouraged all students to grow their own herbs even if they didn’t have a garden. In summing up the value of such a competition in schools, Kelly said ‘it’s great to see the creative spirit of these young students coming through and a competition like this is very good for their confidence’.
