Young Climber reaches for the skies!
At the final of the National Cup Climbing Series held at Mount Maunganui on the weekend of 14/15 August Josh Evans (Year 10 Long Bay College student) performed especially well gaining a Gold, Silver and Bronze medal.
Gold Medal: Under 16 Male Difficulty Silver Medal: Under 16 Male Speed Bronze Medal: Male Opens
Josh is the youngest male to compete in the Opens category against the best adults and coaches in New Zealand. He was the only competitor to top out on the first qualifying round across the ceiling and over the audience. Very exciting! After round 2 and going into the finals, he was ranked number one. This meant he was the last competitor to come out for the final climb. This is a lot of pressure for anyone!
Josh sets off on his World tour with the top youth New Zealand climbers on Tuesday 24 August. Teacher in Charge of Climbing at Long Bay College Jeff Evans said ‘He`s in great shape, very motivated and ready to compete in the Youth World Championships in Scotland. He`ll be gone for a total of 21 days travelling with the NZ Team, the team will visit Australia, Korea, Germany, Austria, England and Scotland’.
