School Production Disco Inferno Huge Success
Well done to all those students involved in this year's school production Disco Inferno. The show was a huge success with the whole cast lifting the performance to a high level.
Success for Students at National Concert Band Competition
The Long Bay College Concert Band competed in the National Concert Band Competition in Hastings on 7 August and won Bronze. Head of Music Nicki Bowles said ‘We competed against professional and adult groups and were thrilled to come away with a Bronze award’. Some students entered the soloist competition and came away with the following awards:
Matthew Jessop (Year 12): two gold awards for clarinet Philippa Mandeno (Year 11): two silver awards for oboe Tina Xu (Year 12): one silver award for flute Jennifer Hutchison (Year 13): one bronze award for trombone
Some of the students also performed as part of the North Shore Youth Symphonic Wind Band and received a GOLD award for their performance.
Dance Workshop Huge Success
During the school holidays about 27 Long Bay College students spent time improving their Hip Hop dance routines at the Alex Larson Hip Hop workshop. The workshop was held on Sunday July 4th and was one of only two workshops held in New Zealand. The other workshop was held in South Auckland. Head of Dance, Ms Sophie Tabakas said ‘Alex Larson is a professional dancer and choreographer from LA that works with big name artists such as Neyo, Ciara, Beyonce, Chris Brown. He has been on a world tour teaching workshops. As soon as I heard that he was coming to Australia/New Zealand on tour I booked him straight away as I didn't want our students to miss out on such a good opportunity to learn from an industry professional. The students found his style and choreography challenging as Los Angeles Hip Hop is very different to what we have in New Zealand. He also had a different way of teaching which the students weren't used to, their style of teaching is very fast over there and students are expected to pick up the choreography quickly. Our students found him to be inspirational and motivational for their dance training’.
Stage Challenge success
Long Bay College students excelled themselves in their performance at the Stage Challenge competition. The students won the following awards: - Excellence in Choreography - Excellence in Stage Use - Excellence in Visual Enhancement - Spirit of Stage Challenge Award (All the other schools on the day vote for this award) - 2nd Place in Raw Division
The theme which the students chose was “The Dawn of 52”. The performance considered a post-apocalyptic world and considered how an alien species might allow humans to carry-on our civilisation. The student leaders took responsibility for all aspects of the production. While some schools enlist the help of professional choreographers, costume designers, and/or stage managers Long Bay College prides itself on the high calibre of student choreographers, student designers, and student producers that run and manage all aspects of the performance.
